Cemetery Commission

Cemetery Commission

*Special Event*
  • Rededication ceremony of Susanna Sherman Scott's gravestone, Sat Sep 9, 1pm. The Cemetery Commission invites you to attend a rededication ceremony of the gravestone marker of Susanna Sherman Scott. Scott passed away in 1793 in Wildersburgh, now known as Barre. The location of her grave is unknown, but her marker was recovered in recent decades and is reputedly the oldest recovered in Barre. The Cemetery Commission voted to place Scott’s marker with those of the rest of her family, in the town’s Wilson Cemetery. Contemplate local history during the rededication ceremony on September 9th, at 1pm in the Wilson Cemetery, at the corner of Websterville Rd and Quarry Hill Rd. Descendants of the Sherman family are especially welcome. Read the article in the August Barre Town newsletter for more about Susanna Sherman Scott.
The Cemetery Commission has full charge and responsibility for the care and maintenance of the town’s cemeteries.  It establishes the policies, rules and regulations for operation of the cemeteries; sets prices for services provided; lays out lots, drives and paths; and recommends to the Selectboard prices for burial lots.

The five members are appointed by the Selectboard to 5-year terms, so one term expires every year.  Members may be re-appointed.  Emails and letters of interest in serving on the Commission are accepted at the Town Manager’s Office from late April through mid-May.
The Sexton (the working cemetery supervisor) attends meetings and informs the Commission of operational matters.  To leave a message for the Cemetery Commission, email offices@barretown.org.  For information about Barre Town’s cemeteries, see the Cemetery pageFor the next Cemetery Commission meeting, please see the town calendar.
