Full-time and Per-Diem Police Officers

Police Officer Full-Time

The Town of Barre, is the second largest town in central Vermont with a stable population of 7,923, is accepting applications for a full-time patrol officer, as well as per diem officers. Barre Town is a suburban to rural middle-class bedroom community that is very supportive of its police department, which has 8 full-time officers counting the chief. The department is well-equipped. Officers are equipped with a body camera and Taser. Officers typically work 4, 10-hour shifts per week. Shifts are changed every 2 months. Opportunities for professional development are provided. In-house training for core requirements is encouraged and officers are incentivized to obtain trainer certification. The department currently has FTO, firearms, K-9, Taser, and use of force instructors. Extra work opportunities include Thunder Road race events, school resource officer details, and grant-funded DUI and occupant protection details. The current labor contract provides for competitive wages, combined paid time-off, health, life, short-term disability, and dental insurance, and a defined benefit pension plan. Wages for full-time officers start at $26.19 per hour, eligible applicants with experience or who are currently certified with the Vermont Criminal Justice Council, may be higher. Applicants must have earned a high school diploma and have a valid driver's license. No experience is necessary. The selected candidate must have the ability to meet all eligibility requirements for admission to the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council academy. Selected candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation including a polygraph test. Certified officers, including out-of-state officers, are welcome to apply. Day, night, weekend, and holiday work is required as is some overtime. 

Officers currently not certified in Vermont will need to complete the certification process through the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council.

The packet may be notarized by any Barre Town Police Department personnel or another current Notary.




Police Officer Per-Diem

The Town of Barre is accepting applications for per-diem police officers.  Per diem officers are used to perform special details, for patrol, and to fill in for full-time officers. Current part-time certified officers are preferred but applications from untrained personnel will be accepted.  Candidates must have a high school diploma, the ability to pass the VCJTC physical fitness test, and a valid driver's license.  Wages for per-diem officers are $23.00 per hour. Interested individuals may obtain an application at the Barre Town Police Department.  Applications will be accepted until the Police Department has an adequate number of active per-diem officers.
