PROPERTY TAXES

Barre Town’s fiscal year is July 1 to June 30.  During the middle of July the one and only tax bill is mailed to property owner(s) of record as of the prior April 1, in accordance with State law.  If you are a new property owner and did not receive a copy of your tax bill at the time of closing, be sure to contact the Town Clerk’s Office.

Fiscal Year 2021-2022 Tax Rates

For fiscal year 2020-2021 property taxes are due in four equal installments. 

The due dates are September 30, 2021, November 15, 2021, February 15, 2022, and May 16, 2022.

If you pay by mail, the payment must be postmarked the due date or earlier to avoid a one-time late fee of 5%.  If the installment plus 5% is not paid within 30 days of the due date then the installment will become delinquent and an additional one-time 8% collectors fee and 1% interest per month on the principal amount will be assessed.

The Barre Town Fiscal Year 2021-2022 property tax bills will be released August 23 2021.

You can pay in person, use the drop box at the front of the municipal building, by mail, or by pre-authorized direct withdrawal from you bank account.        

NOTE: If you forward your tax bill to an escrow company remember to keep a copy which you will need to complete your State of Vermont homestead declaration, due by April 15th each calendar year.

            SEWER USE CHARGE

Only those residents and businesses who are connected to the Town sewer system will receive an annual bill which will be mailed to you in the same envelope with the property tax bill.  Sewer payments for fiscal year 2019-2020 are due semi-annually, August 17, 2020 and February 16, 2021.   

The Sewer bills for the fiscal year 2021-2022 were mailed in June, 2021.

      WATER        

The Town Water system is a metered.  Payments are due quarterly, based on the property location. Water bills are mailed approximately 30 days before each due date.   

The Town frequently receives calls from residents asking questions about their water bill, requesting service, reporting a leak, etc.  But, often the residents are not Town water customers.  For more information on other water systems operating in Barre Town and Special Assessment Districts visit the Public Works web page.

MAKING PAYMENTS ONLINE

The Town offers taxpayers the option of having tax payments, sewer payments and town water payments electronically transferred from their bank account to the Town bank account.  This is a safe, easy and convenient way to make payments. To enroll in the direct debit program complete the application and return it to the Clerk's office 15 days before an installment is due. 

After enrollment, withdraws will be made for the exact amount of each installment on the actual due date.  In the event the due date falls on the weekend or a holiday, the payment will taken the next business day. To pay online, see our payment page.
